Tuta Turns 11: Join the privacy revolution with Legend!
We celebrate and you get the present: For eleven days, you can now get Legend for the price of Revolutionary. 🎁
Our mission to redefine email security started with the launch of Tutanota - derived from Latin, meaning “secure message” – and culminated in the introduction of post-quantum cryptography for emails one year ago. What started as a vision of two passionate developers, our founders Arne and Matthias, has grown into the world’s most secure email and calendar service, used by more than ten million people around the world: Tuta Mail and Tuta Calendar.
Trend to buy European
In the last few months, a movement swapped from Canada to Europe – one, which has brought a constantly growing number of new customers to Tuta Mail and Tuta Calendar. What started in Canada as BuyCanadian - an answer to Trump’s introduction of tariffs – has now also reached Europe, kicking off the trend to BuyEuropean. More and more people are discovering Tuta and are starting to replace their Gmail with a Tuta Mail account. While the trend to boycott the US and buy European is not just about tech products, but goes much deeper than that. With tech products, this trend mainly means to replace Google apps with privacy-first alternatives, also known as “deGoogling”.
This trend has accelerated Tuta’s growth, which has seen an amazing uptick in recent months.

Happiest Birthday of all time
This makes our eleventh birthday the happiest in our company’s history. And for this occasion, we want to give back to the community, to the users who have been with us along the way and who have supported us from the start, and even before it became “trendy” to use a privacy-fist European email provider.
Starting today, and for eleven days, you can get our top plan – Legend – for the price of Revolutionary and save 62% in the first year. Now is the best time to join the privacy revolution and become a “Legend” yourself!
Why switch to Legend now
There’s many reasons to switch to Legend. Most importantly you are going to support a great product that is committed to protecting your privacy and would never use or abuse your data, in contrast to what Big Tech is doing constantly – which we also could never do since all your data is encrypted end-to-end.
But let’s look at the hard facts: With Tuta Mail you’ll get more bang for your buck, especially with Legend! 🤩
⚡️ 500 GB storage
⚡️ 30 Tuta email addresses

From the beginning on: A mission for secure communication
The early days of Tuta(nota) were filled with challenges, but also filled with breakthroughs. We had a simple yet ambitious goal: to create an email service that focused on security and privacy above all else. At a time when mass surveillance by governments and data mining by large tech corporations were becoming increasingly common, we wanted to offer an alternative - a secure, open source, end-to-end encrypted email platform that protected user data by design and that offered a truly anonymous way to create an email account.
At the start, we first built the encryption protocol for Tuta(nota), and then programmed the email clients for web as well as open source mobile apps. On purpose, we did not do it the other way around because that is why most email providers to this day do not – and can not – offer email encryption by default: It is very complex and time-consuming to add encryption to an existing product. The best approach, to also achieve best-in-class security, is to start with the encryption and then build the product. And this is exactly what we have been doing here at Tuta, right from the start. Unlike other services that treat encryption as an optional feature, we designed Tuta in a way so that emails, calendars, and contacts are encrypted by default. This approach ensures that no third party - including us – can access users’ private data.
Key milestones
This party – eleven years Tuta(nota) – comes just weeks after our celebration of one year quantum-resistant encryption in Tuta – which is THE biggest milestone we have achieved in our eleven-year history.
IBM, Google, Amazon, and Microsoft fight for quantum supremacy and invest millions to be the first to own this technology. So the question we need to ask ourselves is: When will these companies have enough Qubits to break currently used encryption algorithms? If this question keeps you up at night, it’s about time to switch to quantum-resistant encryption with Tuta Mail!
Development of quantum computing from 1995 to 2025 (graph): Quantum computing is being developed by Big Tech: IBM, Google, Amazon, and Microsoft fight for quantum supremacy and invest millions to be the first to own this technology. That’s why we need to switch to quantum-safe encryption now!
Yet, before we were able to introduce quantum-safe encryption in Tuta Mail, a lot happened behind the scenes. Check out the key milestones of Tuta’s development across the last eleven years below!

Tuta milestones from 2014 to 2025.
Challenges we overcame
Building our privacy-focused email service Tuta has not always been easy and did not happen without obstacles. As any start-up, we’ve faced difficult times, particularly in the beginning, as well as repeated (and ongoing) legal challenges to end-to-end encryption. However, our dedication to privacy has never wavered. We have continuously fought back against any attempt to undermine encryption – like Chat Control, the Online Safety Bill, or most recently the French Narcotrafic law amendment – to date with success.
We are thrilled by the support that we are getting from our community in this fight. Together, we will continue to defend your privacy and make sure that the open source end-to-end encryption of Tuta will never be undermined.
Commitment to open source and transparency
From the very beginning, we have been committed to open source principles. By making our entire client code available for public review, we ensure that our encryption is being looked at by independent reviewers and improved by the global community. Transparency is key to building trust, and we take pride in being one of the few email providers that openly shares its entire client code and does not use any Google service.
Even our Android app does not use Google’s push notification service – which is unique in the email market, even when looking at privacy-first providers. And removing Google dependencies from our Android app was a massive undertaking. Most apps rely on Google’s FCM for push notifications, but we developed our own notification system to make sure Google can not infringe on your privacy via notifications. This decision enables us to offer a truly independent and privacy-friendly email service.
Additionally, we are proud to be a company that does not rely on advertisements or data mining. Unlike mainstream email providers that monetize user data, our business model is built entirely on subscriptions and donations. This approach allows us to stay independent and focus on protecting user privacy without conflicts of interest. At Tuta, you and your needs always come first.
What’s next for Tuta?
We envision a future where encryption is the default, not the exception. Privacy is a fundamental human right, and everyone should have the right to whisper – even in the digital sphere. We will continue developing encrypted communication services that empower individuals, businesses that need GDPR-compliance, and open source projects to communicate confidentially without fear of data leaks, surveillance, or espionage.
A heartfelt “Thank You” to our users
A heartfelt “Thank You” from the Tuta Team.
As we celebrate this 11-year milestone, we want to express our deepest gratitude to our users. Your support, feedback, and dedication to privacy have fueled our growth and innovation. Every time you choose Tuta over mainstream providers, you contribute to a future where digital privacy is respected and protected.
The journey to this point has already been incredible, and we are excited for the next decade of advancements in secure communication.
Happy 11th Birthday, Tuta! 🎉
