Open Source Spotlight: Veenk uses Tuta Mail as software donation to secure their communication

Veenk chose Tuta Mail not just for security, but also because of its focus on open source and its activeness on the Fediverse.

Veenk Open Source Spotlight receiving Tuta Mail as a software donation

At Tuta, we believe in supporting the open source community and we are proud that we can do so by providing encrypted email and calendar services. That’s why we are excited to spotlight the open source project Veenk, a project dedicated to promoting and sustaining Libre Software, as one of Tuta’s open source donation recipients.

Veenk is a community-driven repository of libre software projects designed to simplify discovery and enhance collaboration. Beyond acting as a central hub for ethical software, Veenk also provides essential tools to help projects achieve financial sustainability through transparency and recurring donations.

The project was founded in Murcia, Spain, so most collaborators are from Spain. Despite that, Veenk is an online community that primarily operates online through the Fediverse, an open and decentralized social network that aligns with the principles of privacy and digital freedom.

Why Veenk chose Tuta Mail

As an open source project focused on ethical software, Veenk needed a secure and private way to communicate with contributors and supporters. Managing their own email infrastructure would have been very resource-intensive, so they sought an alternative that aligned with their values. Tuta Mail emerged as the ideal solution because of the team’s commitment to privacy, sustainability, and open source. When asked for the most compelling reason why Veenk chose Tuta Mail, the founder replied:

“I would like to expand a bit on this question. One of the reasons Veenk was created was that I spend a lot of time researching open source projects to check if they are reliable. The channel they use to communicate with the community to resolve doubts, share news and provide support is one of the keys to determining this trustworthiness. For this reason, what I like most about Tuta Mail is that I can engage with them through the Fediverse. There is no point in having a privacy solution if you have to give your data to a big tech company to follow their social media accounts.”

Importance of end-to-end encryption

The other deciding factors for Veenk, of course, was Tuta’s end-to-end encryption – a protocol that since one year is quantum-safe.

For Veenk, using quantum-resistant encryption is not just about securing communication today but also future-proofing against potential threats. The founder recalls first hearing about quantum computing’s ability to break conventional encryption:

“I remember feeling powerless and wishing it would take a long time before this happened. So it is a great relief that, after a few years, incredible engineers have come up with solutions.”

By using Tuta Mail’s quantum-safe encryption, Veenk ensures that their contacts, calendars and emails remain secure, now and in the future.

“I believe that with modern technological innovation, there is no reason to communicate online in any other way. Especially the people who are involved in our community appreciate that we are not overlooking the privacy issue and that we are consistent with our values.”

Veenk recognizes that open source projects thrive on trust and reputation. Choosing a secure email provider like Tuta Mail reassures Veenk’s community that they take security seriously. For Veenk’s members – like for many open source enthusiasts – privacy is a fundamental value.

Spreading the word

The founder of Veenk has also encouraged friends and colleagues to switch to Tuta Mail.

“Fortunately, more and more people, including my friends, are becoming aware of privacy and the fact that “if you’re not paying for the product, then you are the product”. So my reputation as a lover of Linux, privacy and free technology is enough for them to consider Tuta Mail as a good solution.”

This grassroots approach is essential in spreading awareness about privacy-first alternatives to Big Tech services, like Tuta’s recommendations to deGoogle.
