New Tuta Calendar app is now on F-Droid!
Encrypted, open source, zero strings to Google – introducing the Tuta Calendar.
Tuta Calendar now on F-Droid
At Tuta, it is our goal not just to offer best encryption and best privacy, but also to make our apps available outside of the traditional tech ecosystems dominated by companies like Google and Apple. We believe that Google’s dominance and Apple’s power – which is supposedly going to be limited by the European Digital Markets Act – are too strong, and we need more and more powerful alternatives.
F-Droid is a great example as an app store replacement for Google Play, just like Tuta Mail is a great replacement for Gmail, so it’s only natural that we at Tuta want to publish all our apps on this store.
Now, shortly after its initial launch, the Tuta Calendar app joins the Tuta Mail app on F-Droid, making it easy for you to enjoy both secure email and calendar services, entirely free from Google’s tracking infrastructure and Google’s advertisement business.
Story of launching Tuta Mail on F-Droid
The journey to publish our apps on F-Droid began in 2017 with the release of Tuta Mail, an important step that required a monumental effort.
Unlike Google Play, F-Droid prioritizes apps that respect user privacy and do not rely on Google’s tracking systems, meaning we could not use Google’s Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) for email push notifications if we wanted to publish on this open source platform. Given the complexities of notification services, this posed a challenge. We needed to build a completely new, secure notification system from scratch to maintain our zero-Google policy, and we finally achieved this in 2017, allowing us to make Tuta Mail available on F-Droid without sacrificing user privacy.
Our team created a custom notification solution and managed to implement it in an energy-efficient way, an alternative to Google’s FCM that lets us fully bypass Google’s infrastructure. This solution was no small feat as each released Android version introduced new restrictions on background activity.
In addition, a few months back, the team added the much needed functionality of previews of push notifications on iOS and Android as well as quick actions like delete and mark read on these notifications. These were major development steps that improved the usability of our eseucre email app even further.
Tuta Mail’s launch on F-Droid empowered users to access an email service truly free of third-party surveillance.
Today, we are one of the few secure email providers whose notifications are self-hosted, keeping users’ metadata and message data safe from Big Tech’s tracking.
Focus on open source, privacy and security
Publishing Tuta Mail on F-Droid in 2017 was a critical milestone in our mission to help users move away from invasive data ecosystems. We’re proud that both Tuta Mail and Tuta Calendar now give users a fully independent, privacy-respecting option, whether they’re using Google-free ROMs or traditional devices.
Every update we’ve made to Tuta Mail and the new Tuta Calendar has been focused on enhancing your security, privacy, and user freedom.
Our commitment to providing alternatives that respect your data privacy so that you can replace Gmail with Tuta Mail remains steadfast. Whether you’re managing emails or scheduling events, you can rely on Tuta for a digital experience free of Big Tech’s surveillance systems.
