Overview of best Amazon alternatives in 2026

Whatever you need – whether it is technology, clothes, decorations or even food – Amazon has it. One click and it is on its way to you. As the leading online market provider worldwide, Amazon owns the monopoly when it comes to online shopping. At Amazon you can buy basically anything, but at what cost? Over the last couple of years not only has the company faced scrutiny, for its working conditions, for example, but also its founder has faced some backlash over his excessive wealth and lifestyle. Luckily, there are European alternatives available so you can become independent from Jeff Bezos and his Big Tech company.

What is Amazon?

Founded in 1994 by Jeff Bezos in Seattle, Amazon has become the big player in e-commerce as it is the largest online retailer worldwide with an estimated 310 million active users. Originally, founded as an online book selling company, Amazon has expanded its business with nowadays offering products in categories like beauty, toys, home and much more. Moreover, Amazon has grown into an internet based business enterprise that now offers digital streaming with Amazon Prime or cloud computing with AWS for example.

Many more companies, you might not even be aware of, have been acquired by Amazon, including Audible, Twitch or Whole Foods.

Why people are choosing to stop using Amazon

While Jeff Bezos is well-known for the extensive wealth that Amazon has given him, the same can certainly not be said about his employees. Amazon has repeatedly made headlines for its toxic and unsafe working conditions. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that Amazon is ranked among the top companies with the highest employee turnover and more than double the injury rate than the industry standard.

Moreover, there is the company’s ecological impact: With a carbon footprint the same level as the whole country of Norway, due to its product transportation relying primarily on oil, there definitely is room for improvement.

There are further reasons why people are starting to look for alternatives to Amazon: With a price increase for Amazon Prime users in 2022 from 69€ to 89.90€ and the implementation of ads before streaming, many are not happy with Amazon’s service anymore. Moreover, instead of previously 30 days, you now have only 14 days to return your order.
