For a free internet: Tuta Mail is a partner of Digital Independence Day
Save Social, Tuta, and lots of other organizations are building a better web – and you can be part of the journey! The next Digital Independence Day is Sunday, February 1st.
Together with Save Social, we at Tuta are calling on all Europeans to take action on and choose an internet for the people – not for monopolists. We are happy to announce that Tuta is an official partner of Digital Independence Day (DIDay). This initiative by the German Chaos Computer Club fully aligns with our values here at Tuta: Giving the power back to the people.
DIDay stands against data abuse by Big Tech, and so do we! Together, we are fighting for a better web, one where your data is being respected and protected.
Björn Staschen from Save Social - Networks For Democracy - says:
We’re excited to see so many people, organizations and companies following our call and wanting to contribute to building a better web. We welcome Tuta as our partner and are confident that together we can make the change that’s needed within our communities to also drive change on a political level.”
Europe’s risky digital dependence
The year 2025 has clearly shown how risky Europe’s dependence on non-European tech providers is. The re-election of Donald Trump, repeated announcements of tariffs, and the alarming incident in which the Outlook account of the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in The Hague was deactivated on the orders of the US government bring us face to face with an uncomfortable truth:
Europe’s digital infrastructure is politically vulnerable.
Anyone who outsources central communication tools and social debates to platforms owned by big tech corporations from the US or China is giving up a piece of sovereignty.
Digital Independence Day: Time to turn our backs on Big Tech
To stand up against Big Tech, Save Social and the Chaos Computer Club launched Digital Independence Day (DIDay) at 39C3 at the end of 2025. The aim is to encourage people to change their digital habits – away from Big Tech and toward European, open, and decentralized alternatives.
Well-known author and satirist Mark-Uwe Kling held the launch speech at the 39C3, which you can watch here. His pitch: Now is the time to reclaim social media and personal communication, and to fight for a free, democratic digital public sphere.
Why Tuta supports DIDay
As a European email provider with end-to-end encryption, open-source code, and a clear focus on users’ right to privacy, we at Tuta have always stood for digital self-determination. We want to give the power back to the people. At Tuta, the user owns their data – not us or anybody else. Because of the built-in encryption only the user can access their data and know for sure that it’s not being abused, not for posting targeted ads, not for training opaque AI systems like the Big Tech’s are doing it now.
Our partnership with DIDay is therefore a logical step. Together with Save Social, we are committed to:
-
An internet without monopolistic control
-
Genuine privacy and data protection
-
European digital sovereignty
Because: A free internet needs choices; and courageous users: YOU!
Join in: Your switch is your protest
Become a hero and free yourself from Big Tech!
Digital protest doesn’t have to be loud. It starts with everyday decisions. At DIDay, Save Social provides practical step-by-step instructions on how to use European services for email, cloud storage, messaging, and social networks.
Every switch counts. Every account less with Big Tech weakens their power.
What began in Germany is now growing across borders. DIDay is a community-driven European project, open to anyone who shares the same vision. Decentralization is the key to an internet that serves us – not monopolistic big techs. And decentralization is something we are good at here in Europe.
Now is the perfect moment to get started. Check out the recipes to switch at DIDay.
