Tutanota activates compression to give you more free storage
Compressed emails need 5 to 10 times less storage than uncompressed emails.
Activation of email compression
Starting from October 17th compression of all not end-to-end encrypted emails in Tutanota will be activated. For this, all Tutanota clients (web, desktop clients, Android & iOS apps) older than version 3.59.8 are being disabled.
This follows a notice to all our users via email four weeks ago that we need to disable all clients older than version 3.59.8 beginning of October.
The disabling of old Tutanota clients was necessary to activate compression of all HTML emails in Tutanota, which achieves a compression factor of 5 to 10.
Compression of all emails
The current compression takes place on the server so it can not be applied to internal Tutanota emails, which are end-to-end encrypted on the client before being sent to the server. Encrypted data cannot be compressed anymore.
We plan to improve the compression in Tutanota further by also compressing internal Tutanota emails locally on the client before these are encrypted and sent.
