  • The EU Commission is planning automatic CSAM scanning of your private communication – or total surveillance in the name of child protection.

    In its draft law to combat child sexual abuse, the EU Commission describes one of the most sophisticated mass surveillance apparatuses ever deployed outside China. Even if an AI scans your private messages, it remains warrantless mass surveillance of everyone. Once again, the EU Commission is using child protection as a pretext to introduce mass surveillance without any reason.

  • The Mitto AG surveillance case - or why we must never backdoor encryption.

    Mitto AG, a Swiss company, is said to have helped with mobile phone surveillance on a grand scale. Investigations are ongoing, but current leaks hint at one employee that cooperated with secret services around the world by handing out location data freely - and without any legal oversight.

  • Fixed potential hard-to-execute XSS vulnerability in Tutanota.

    On April 27th a hard-to-execute Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability has been reported to us. This has now been fixed. We thank the user reporting the vulnerability. The vulnerability only affected Tutanota when used in Firefox and it needed several steps by the user to make it potentially executable.

  • You are being tracked, profiled & targeted online. It's time to ban targeted advertising.

    Recently, the Norwegian Consumer Council published a report calling for a ban on surveillance-based ads. In solidarity, Tutanota joined the undersigned privacy-first organizations to send the following letter to EU and US regulators on July 7th, 2021, to encourage them to take action during legislative sessions and any relevant privacy discussions.

    Everybody knows them, everybody hates them: cookie banners. In a landmark ruling, the Belgian DPA has declared central part of the consent given via cookie banners as illegal and not compatible with the GDPR. Will this finally end the annoying task of clicking on cookies?

  • Today Google turns on activity tracking for many users that had it turned off.

    Effective today, Google is changing its Workspace Settings, including a change that activates Google activity tracking for all users of Workspace accounts even if the organizations admin disabled activity tracking for all users previously. What is more, admins can no longer control this setting for their users, but all users need to individually toggle the tracking off again.

    It's 2022 and women still earn less than men. At Tutanota, we are doing our part to end this injustice: with transparent salaries. All employees are paid on the basis of transparent criteria so that no discrimination can occur, not even due to part-time work or parental leave.
