  • On European Data Privacy Day we call on the EU to uphold strong encryption.

  • Online collaboration tools to help you during the COVID19 pandemic.

Home office has become the standard for many employees since the start of the COVID19 pandemic. While lock downs in Europe and the USA were eased over the summer, many are now advised to stay home once again. For working remotely, however, we need tools that keep us and our data safe.

  • As Signal booms, so does Tutanota.

WhatsApp has issued a new privacy policy that forces users to share their WhatsApp data with Facebook - the mother company of WhatsApp. As a result users are flocking to Signal - the most popular encrypted and privacy-friendly chat app. This has also spiked new sign-ups at Tutanota, the most secure email service with a strong focus on privacy and open source.

  • Google's AMP is not made to improve speed, but ad revenue.

AMP is an attempt by Google to colonize free platforms such as web and email. Google does not want to make your mailbox faster, but they want to control every aspect of it. Google's excuse is that the mobile web is too slow and because of that we need a special Google-designed web: AMP. The US antitrust complaint against Google now shows that the claim 'to improve speed with AMP' is false.

  • Email alias: How do email aliases add to my security and how do I use them?

An email alias is an additional email address that you can use for a special purpose. Tutanota lets you add five or more aliases in any of the paid versions. You can use these alias email addresses for receiving and sending secure emails. • Another terrorist attack, another surveillance bill proposed. Will politicians ever learn that breaking encryption would bring more harm than good?

Only five days after the terrorist attack, the EU Council of Ministers is proposing a draft to backdoor WhatsApp, Signal and other encrypted messenger apps to combat terrorism. While this looks like politicians have just been waiting for another attack to present their newest surveillance bill, let's look at the facts of this particular case: Would Austrian authorities have been able to stop the Vienna terrorist attack, had they had access to the encrypted chat history of the terrorist prior to the attack?

  • What is Joe Biden's stance on encryption?

Almost all votes are counted, and it looks like Joe Biden is going to be the next President of the United States of America. This has a huge impact on lots of issues, and also on the ongoing crypto wars between privacy defenders and state surveillance advocates. So how would a new presidency affect encryption? What can we expect from Joe Biden?

  • The NSA phone surveillance program was illegal and expensive: And it did not stop a single terrorist attack.

Data from the USA and Europe show that mass surveillance does not help to stop terrorist attacks. Yet, the authorities continue to rely on surveillance technology like facial recognition and location tracking. Instead we must focus on our human rights and protect what is important to keep the power with the people: Our right to privacy and freedom of speech.

  • DDoS attack on our DNS infrastructure

Last night multiple DNS providers were attacked to take down Tutanota. In combination with wrongly cached DNS entries for the tutanota.com domain at different DNS servers, this led to a downtime of several hours for millions of Tutanota users. We had switched DNS entries, but as the propagation takes time, some users did not get access to Tutanota immediately.
