Supporting the European ePrivacy Regulation
The EU is currently working on updating the legal framework that governs the privacy of electronic communications with the aim of reinforcing trust and security in the Digital Single Market. The European Parliament, in its report adopted in October last year, included much-needed provisions supporting the use of end-to-end encryption and a clear stance against backdoors. Meanwhile, Member States in the Council have not managed to find a compromise so far.
Fighting for privacy: How encryption & data protection laws safeguard your emails.
Even though the German Constitution stresses everybody's Right to Privacy as a fundamental Human Right, German politicians regularly call for new surveillance laws. Such attacks on our Right to Privacy are heavily debated and criticized in the German media. To this day, every German law infringing the Human Right to Privacy was declared unconstitutional. That's what makes Germany one of the best countries for privacy-focused companies such as Tutanota.

The EFAIL Hype Draws a Lot of Attention to Known Bugs. This Will Enhance Everybody's Security.
EFAIL describes potential attack vectors on PGP and S/MIME encrypted emails exploitable in several mail clients. While some argue that the publication of EFAIL and the recommendation by EFF to disable PGP for now are an exaggeration, raising this issue in such a dramatic way will actually help to improve PGP and S/MIME security in the long-run. Some of the attack vectors have been known for decades, yet, several mail clients are not patched to date. Because of the 'hype' created by the authors of EFAIL and by the EFF, this will finally change.

CLOUD Act: Attack on Data Protection & Privacy Rights
The CLOUD Act - Clarifying Lawful Overseas Use of Data Act - has recently been enacted into US federal law. It allows US authorities to request data from American companies whether the data is stored in the US or abroad. While US cloud services such as Google and Facebook welcome this law, it is heavily criticized by data protection experts and privacy rights activists.
Surveillance Database of Journalists to Be Compiled in the USA. Where Is the Outcry?
Donald Trump is not known for being a friend of the media. Now he seems to be taking up new methods to control unfavorable journalists. The Department of Homeland Security wants to create a database of journalists and bloggers from around the world that can be filtered by location, content and sentiment. While the DHS claims this is standard PR practice, the alarm bells must ring. After all, surveillance is what upcoming autocrats commonly use to undermine democracy.
