Tuta Drive in closed beta

Tuta, the company behind Tuta Mail and Tuta Calendar, is on a mission to offer truly private and secure digital solutions to everyone around the world. With Tuta Mail and Tuta Calendar being used by over ten million people, it only felt right that the next major feature to develop would be a quantum-secure cloud storage solution. And now, it’s finally here: Tuta Drive!

Tuta Drive is a secure storage solution protected with quantum-resistant end-to-end encryption, perfect for individuals and businesses looking to protect confidential files, pictures, and data. Like Tuta Mail and Calendar, Tuta Drive comes with no ads, no tracking, and no AI.

Thanks to automatic encryption and built with Tuta’s zero-knowledge architecture, all files are encrypted end-to-end by default and anything stored within Tuta Drive is secured from third-parties and authorized access - including us at Tuta.

All of Tuta’s products are hosted in Germany, under strict data protection laws ensuring GDPR compliance and digitally sovereign solutions for businesses and individuals.

Tuta Drive in beta lets you:

• Upload & store your data: Protect your files, images, videos, and more in Tuta’s encrypted cloud storage with peace of mind that your private data remains confidential.

• Sync storage across devices: Transfer any files from your iPhone or Android and access or download them on your desktop, and vice versa.

• Backup your files: Tuta Drive is the perfect place to backup your files end-to-end encrypted by default.

The Tuta Drive in beta allows you to sync storage across your devices, and organize, upload, and backup your files. Built by Tuta, the Tuta Drive offers automatic end-to-end encryption of your confidential data and it’s easy to use!

With Tuta Drive in beta, our development team will select existing Tuta users for extended testing. In the next few months, we will gradually make Tuta Drive available to more existing users.

At launch, the beta version of Tuta Drive is only accessible within Tuta Mail’s web client on mobile or desktop. But as we continue to develop Tuta Drive, we will add mobile apps for Android and iOS and include Tuta Drive in our free desktop clients for Linux, Windows, and macOS.

PQDrive project: from start to finish

Early on, we as privacy fighters understood that quantum computing is one of the biggest threats to confidential communication online. So following our PQMail project that we kicked off in 2020, we launched the PQDrive project in 2023 with a 1.5 million euro grant from KMU-innovativ funding, a grant for SMEs by the German government for research and innovation. So our next big challenge was set: developing a post-quantum secure cloud solution. Tuta Drive is being developed in cooperation with the University of Wuppertal. The Wuppertal team are experts in cryptography and close to the latest scientific research, helping us to build a secure cloud storage solution that is easy to use and comes with the best security standards, including quantum-resistant encryption. The cooperation with the Wuppertal team has been excellent so far, and we look forward to finalizing Tuta Drive together with them.

Today, we are excited that this project has reached its almost final step with this closed beta release. Tuta Drive will be the perfect replacement for Big Tech cloud storage providers like Google Drive and Dropbox that do not offer end-to-end encrypted solutions and, thus, put your data at risk.

Quantum-proof Email, Calendar, and Drive

Tuta offers an all-in-one secure ecosystem: Quantum-proof Email, Calendar, and Drive.

Earlier this year, we successfully completed the roll-out of TutaCrypt to all Tuta accounts, ensuring that all Tuta users are now secured with post-quantum encryption. This marked the success of Tuta’s PQMail project, which was also a government funded research project to develop an encrypted email prototype that could send emails with post-quantum secure encryption. With this implementation of quantum-resistant cryptography, you are guaranteed that your private communications are also secured from future threats when using Tuta Mail.

Now, with the launch of the Tuta Drive, Tuta’s suite of products has grown to offer Tuta Mail, Tuta Calendar, and Tuta Drive - the perfect combination of productivity tools with the security you deserve and all three seamlessly integrated with each other.

The next steps for Tuta Drive

While Tuta Drive is in closed beta, our team will continue to improve and develop the solution. We also look forward to hearing feedback from our existing users who have been invited to test the Tuta Drive in beta.

Once Tuta Drive is ready for public beta, we will release more details and, of course, more features for the highly anticipated Tuta Drive!
